Fernando will replace Gael Monfils in next week’s Abierto Mexicano Telcel, according to the tournament’s website. Gael had to withdraw from the tournament due to swelling in his knee, so Fernando stepped in to take his place. This means he’ll also displace Fernando Gonzalez as top seed.
This is Fernando second trip to Acapulco. His first was back in 2004, when he reached the final (losing to compatriot Carlos Moya)

Playing in another tournament is good for Verdasco. Hopefully he is feeling better this time around and his sciatica is not bothering him. I hope that with this tournament his confidence will build and be able to perform better in much larger and highly publicized matches such as Indian Wells.
Here’s to cheering him to another final, hopefully.

Glad his getting some match play before IW and Miami. Buena suerte Nando!
Btw, is there any news about him playing DC? I was actually hoping he was back in Spain preparing for that.

None yet, afaik. Costa has, I think, a week before the tie to make his picks, so its likely we’ll have to wait until next weekend to know for sure. Although the fact that he’s playing on clay may be a good sign that he’s not only trying to get some ranking points, but that he is getting in some match play for Davis Cup, even if he only ends up doing doubles.
Then again, since he’s already in North America, he may decide to skip out on DC and go straight to California to start preparing for Indian Wells. But then again, Ferrer, Ferrero and Almagro are all playing in Mexico too, and at least Ferrer and Ferrero will be in heavy consideration for the team, so they could all just fly over together :)

Thanks for the update. All the suspense is making me antsy. I keep checking the Spanish sites and nothing. I’m kinda ambivalent about him playing DC. On the one hand, its been such a booster for his confidence but it might take its toll on his performance in IW.
